Drag chain conveyors are used for special transportation of smaller capacities. Drag chain conveyors work on the principle of a chain-and-flight combination pulling a volume of material along. The chain is equipped with different flights/paddles and drags the material from various charging points to several discharging points. The enclosed conveying device is used mainly for dusty, abrasive, or hot material and, as such, has only a very limited application in coal. However, the power plant industry and other coal industry players ask for specialized conveying systems, for which the very flexible drag chain conveyor might be a solution. Horizontal, vertical, or inclined solutions, with a possible explosion-proof and dust-tight design, might be necessary for some special applications in the coal industry.

If you took an open-ended length of bicycle chain, cleaned the oil off it and laid it on the worktop in your kitchen you would be ready to simulate a drag chain. First off, nail one end of the chain firmly to the worktop (don't try this at home) then pick up the other end and place it on top of that which is nailed down, so that the chain loops back on itself from the middle. The loose end can now be moved back and forward, sliding over the chain below and extending almost full length in one direction and then the other. If you were to embed a small electrical cable within the chain it could power a moving object and follow it up and down the worktop.

The production version of a drag chain (Fig. 9.22) is similar to the do-it-yourself version, essentially a long jointed tray carrying cables within it. The kind we are talking of here can be connected to a power supply within the CMA and laid halfway down a cave, then loop back on themselves and connect to the crane itself. It is quite a neat solution with cable furling and unfurling as a crane moves along, and is more reliable than a cable reeling system. Once again, though, it has limited use within a radioactive cave environment, mainly because drag chains are unable to contribute to a crane's recovery.

Types of Reject Methods

Metal detectors are equipped with a reject that will remove a product from the conveyor once metals have been detected. This is an important element of metal detectors and keeps faulty products from getting packaged and processed along with the uncontaminated ones and ultimately saving your company time and money by avoiding recalls. There are a variety of types of reject methods, including the following.

Reject methods

Air blast reject - uses a blast of air to remove any contaminated items from the conveyor. This is a fast way to remove products since production doesn’t have to be paused and works best with lightweight m

aterials.

Overhead Conveyor Definition of Terms

Each powered overhead conveyor consists of:

A continuous circuit of chain running through track and a variety of vertical and horizontal curves.

A Drive unit that grabs the chain and pull it through the track.

A Take-up unit that ensures the chain is always stretched tight, even as it wears over many years of use.

Electrical controls which may be a simple on/off motor starter, a variable speed controller or it may have an industrial grade programmable logic controller or it may even have a PC or host system.

Synchronous Conveyor – it all moves together

The term synchronous is often used to describe what type of overhead conveyor system it is. The term means that all loads on the conveyor will move at the same harmonized pace, because the chain that carries them is continuous. For example: start the conveyor and all start, stop it and all stop.

The desired load being carried will be held with some sort of fixture, be it a simple or more complex carrier with many moving parts to lock in the load, allow the operators to swivel it, etc. These must be designed to move up and down along the track without problems.

Overhead Conveyor Carries Non-Conveyable Loads

The overhead conveyor can carry loads that are often considered to be non-conveyable on most conveyors due to their shape. The overhead conveyor is traditionally used in painting systems, where product cannot be handled by humans or there will be a paint defect. It can carry the loads through harsh environments like caustic washers, spray or paint application booths, and very hot drying and baking ovens without much effect on itself.

Energy Efficient Conveyor

The other overhead conveyor advantage is the ease of use. Most powered overhead conveyors have only 1 motor and can still power 700-800 feet of conveyor. It will consume less energy than a typical hair dryer; making it a somewhat more environmentally friendly option for your warehouse space and at the same time saves you money. For more detailed information check out this video on overhead conveyor basics.

What is an Enclosed Track Overhead Conveyor?

The mechanism is quite simple – we have a chain consisting of bearings and links, which is pulled through a track. This overhead conveyor is specifically called an enclosed track overhead conveyor because the chain is almost completely covered by the track. This is an important safety feature because it is safer for operators to use and less likely to become contaminated with dirt, dust, paint and other particles. There are open style conveyors available but are these styles are less appealing.

1. screw conveyor – The basics

Screw conveyor is a device widely used in the industry to transport solid materials in the direction of torsion and in horizontal, vertical, and inclined directions. It consists of three main parts: screw chute, screw shaft and screw blade.

– Screw trough: there are 2 types of U-shaped trough and round screw trough, made of steel plate with a common thickness of 2 -10 (mm) or heat-resistant steel plate if the material temperature is high, steel must be used.

– Screw: is made from steel pipe to ensure the standards of thickness and hardness, the end of each pipe segment is welded with a flange to install an intermediate bearing.

– Impeller: made from steel plate, or stainless steel welded to the screw to form a spiral blade.

2. Working principle

The operating principle of the screw conveyor is based on the combination of the gravity of the material and the frictional force between the material and the machine wall. As the screw rotates, the blade generates thrust, pushing the material to move reciprocally along the bottom of the conveyor.

The material at the mid-axis point is pushed by the material from behind, while the non-rotating nut moves in the direction of the screw. The screw propels the material and ensures uniform distribution over the entire conveyor.

3. Application of screw conveyor

Screw conveyor has many applications in different industries. Here are some common applications of screw conveyors:

Wastewater treatment: With the ability to effectively transport sludge. Sludge conveyor screws are widely used in wastewater treatment systems to transport sludge in the best way.

Food industry: In the food industry, equipment is used to transport wastes and scraps, making production and handling processes more efficient.

Agriculture: In the agricultural industry, equipment also plays an important role in handling organic fertilizers and other organic materials. It helps to transport and distribute fertilizers evenly across the gardens, ensuring an efficient supply of nutrients to the plants.

Construction industry: In the handling and transportation of construction materials such as sand, stone, cement, and screw conveyor has an important role. It helps to ensure a smooth production and construction process, reducing labor time and effort.

4. Benefits of screw conveyor

High efficiency: With a simple design structure and effective operating principle, the screw conveyor allows the conveying and handling of materials quickly and efficiently.

High reliability: Sludge conveyors are usually made from high-quality materials such as sheet steel and stainless steel, ensuring durability and rigidity during use.

Cost savings: Using a screw conveyor can help save production and operating costs. With efficient material handling and distribution, it reduces labor time and effort, as well as saves materials and energy.

Flexibility: Can be customized and tailored to suit the specific requirements of each application. This makes it suitable for many different industries and sizes.

Slat conveyors use a slat and chain system to move components along an assembly line. They are often used where production operations are performed with the parts located on the conveyor. Steel panels are attached to the chain with special chain attachments, and the chain is driven by an electric motor and gearbox. Therefore they are one of the most commonly used types of conveyor for moving parts along and assembly line while the work is being performed. They are ideally suited to applications where components are being assembled onto a fixture located at an ergonomic working height.

Slat conveyor system also allow production assembly operators to work on one or both sides of the line. Fixtures can be added to the slats to enable parts to rotate 90, 180 or 360 degrees to facilitate better ergonomic access. During model change-overs, the tooling or fixtures can be modified or replaced, and the conveyor is re-used for another new application.

In automotive plants, a slat conveyor system may be used to convey parts like instrument panels, center consoles or door trims. They are used for engine and power-train assembly. They are also used for sub-assembly of frames and axles, and on a larger scale even for vehicles after they have been fitted with the chassis components and move to the final assembly line (sometimes known as a ‘flat top’ conveyor line). Customers sometimes call them slat conveyor belts as the slats look and operate like a belt conveyor.

What is a truck loading conveyor?

A truck loading conveyor is a system used to load trucks with loose materials such as boxes, crates, or pallets. These conveyors typically have an adjustable height and width to accommodate different truck sizes. The materials are fed onto the conveyor from a loading dock or platform and are then transported into the truck bed. Some truck loading conveyors also feature tilt mechanisms to help load the materials more evenly.

How do truck loading conveyors work?

Truck loading conveyors are primarily used for loading and unloading trucks with various types of materials. These conveyors can be either stationary or portable, depending on the needs of the business. Stationary truck loading conveyors are typically found in warehouses, while portable units are more common in outdoor applications. The most common type of truck loading conveyor is a roller conveyor. This type of conveyor uses a series of rollers to move materials from one point to another. The rollers may be powered by an electric motor or by gravity, depending on the specific application. Roller conveyors are often used to load and unload heavy materials, such as pallets or drums. Another type of truck loading conveyor is a belt conveyor. Belt conveyors use a continuous belt to move materials from one point to another. They are commonly used to transport lightweight materials, such as packages or boxes. Belt conveyors can be powered by an electric motor or by gravity, depending on the needs of the application. Truck loading conveyors can also be customized to meet the specific needs of a business. For example, some businesses may need a conveyor that can load and unload multiple trucks at once. Others may need a conveyor that is able to load and unload trucks with different types of materials. No matter what the specific needs may be, there is likely a type of truck loading conveyor that can meet those needs.
